Derrick Pickering
Derrick Pickering, FNP-C, CNM, is known for providing compassionate, comprehensive patient care with a strong focus on women’s health. His path in medicine reflects both professional dedication and meaningful personal experiences that shaped his approach to care. Through resilience and commitment, he has developed into a thoughtful and empathetic healthcare provider who prioritizes patient-centered treatment and long-term wellness. Derrick was born in Utah and found his inspiration for healthcare at a young age. As a child facing illness, he was deeply impacted by the nurses who cared for him with patience and compassion. That early experience motivated him to pursue a career in nursing so he could offer the same level of support and understanding to others. His academic journey reflects a consistent commitment to excellence. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brigham Young University Idaho with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and earned a GPA of 3.92. He later completed a Master of Science as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Brigham Young University, Provo, graduating with a GPA of 3.9 in August 2014. While completing his family nurse practitioner training, he worked in pediatrics for nearly 5 years, gaining hands-on experience and strengthening his dedication to patient care. Personal challenges within his family also shaped Pickering’s professional direction. Experiences with infertility, infant loss, and pregnancy complications led him to develop a deeper interest in women’s health. This personal connection inspired him to pursue additional training and earn a postgraduate certificate as a Certified Nurse-Midwife from Frontier Nursing University in May 2022. He is dual board-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Nurse Midwife, reflecting his broad expertise and commitment to high standards of practice. Throughout his career, he has focused on delivering evidence-based care while ensuring that patients feel heard and respected at every stage of treatment. Derrick has served in several clinical roles, which have strengthened his experience in obstetrics and gynecology. Since March 2021, he has worked as a Certified Nurse Midwife and Nurse Practitioner at Sunrise Women’s Health in Mapleton, UT, where he founded a clinic that provides comprehensive healthcare services to women of all ages. His services include primary care, hormone replacement therapy, help with menopause, gynecological services, infertility care, midwifery, contraception, and lab assessments. He emphasizes listening carefully to patients' concerns, identifying patients' goals, and using shared decision-making to guide treatment. In earlier roles as a Student Nurse Midwife at Wellsprings Women’s Care in Tooele, UT, and Bella Women’s Care in Phoenix, AZ, he performed obstetric and gynecological exams, labor management, assisted with births, and provided postpartum care under professional supervision. These experiences strengthened his clinical confidence and reinforced his commitment to safe and supportive maternity care. Derrick Pickering has also contributed to professional education by presenting on The Effectiveness of Psychopharmacotherapy at the 2019 UVU Conference on Suicide Prevention. Beyond his professional work, he is devoted to his family. Married to Stephanie Pickering for over 17 years, they have three living children, including one with special needs. They also experienced the loss of twins born prematurely. These experiences have deepened his empathy and strengthened his dedication to supporting patients through both joyful and difficult moments. In his free time, Derrick Pickering enjoys scuba diving, vacationing, camping, hiking, and spending meaningful time with his family.
